Welcome Message
On behalf of Thalassaemia Society (Singapore) and Singapore, it gives us great pleasure to invite you to the 2nd Singapore Thalassaemia Conference for Asia 2011 held in KK Women’s and Children's Hospital, Auditorium level 1, Women's Tower in Singapore from 2nd to 4th September 2011. This conference is jointly organized by the Thalassaemia Society (Singapore), and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH).
Building on the impetus from the success of organizing the International Thalassaemia Conference in 2008, Thalassaemia Society (Singapore) aims to help to advance a possible cure for Thalassaemia by bringing together health professionals from around the world. The theme of this conference is ‘Gene and Cell Therapies for Thalassaemia – is there a cure in sight?” will provide further insight into future prospects of various advancement in thalassaemia treatments.
By far the highest numbers of people affected by Thalassaemia reside in Asia. Treating people with thalassaemia in Asia therefore presents unique problems. Gene and cell based therapy options suitable in other locations such as Europe may not be widely applicable within the Asian environment thus not able to have a high healthcare impact.
The 2nd Singapore Thalassaemia Conference for Asia 2011 scientific programme will be unique in its two-fold aims and objectives. Firstly, to review the current treatment options being used within Asia. Secondly, to look forward to what gene and cell based therapies need to be developed in order to reach out to the large numbers who need them in order to have a significant healthcare impact especially within regions such as India, Southern China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand. Distinguished clinicians and scientists from within and outside Asia will present and discuss topical subjects within the field of stem cell transplantation, prospects of fetal gene therapy and fetal globin activation.
This will be a very exciting conference for parents and patients too as it will be the first step to realize our ultimate goal for a cure for thalassaemia. Parents and patients of thalassaemia can look forward to hearing from leading medical professionals in this field. This will also be a great opportunity to meet, share and learn from not just each other’s experiences but also the medical professionals from around the region.
Singapore which aims to be a medical hub is a leader in providing successful nationwide thalassaemia screening and long-term healthcare services such as blood donation and screening programs. It is among the best in the world and we are well poised to take this conference to great heights. As a destination, Singapore is the meeting place for both Asian and Western influences. Asian health professionals, parents and patients can attend the conference easily while their Asia Pacific counterparts will find Singapore a worthy destination to be in.
Participants will have ample opportunities to improve on their knowledge and this will generate exciting opportunities to learn and share with health professionals. Ultimately, this would greatly enhance standards of care for thalassaemia patients.
We look forward to your support and attendance and are excited to meet you in Singapore.
To a quality and meaningful life through effective management,
Yours sincerely,
